Dynamic vs static QR codes
- 1
Same visual, different URL
Both QR types look identical when printed. The only difference is that static QRs encode the long target URL directly; dynamic QRs encode a short redirect URL like /r/abc123.
- 2
Static = locked after print
Static QRs cannot be changed once printed. If the destination URL moves, the printed material becomes useless and the QR has to be regenerated and reprinted.
- 3
Dynamic = editable after print
Dynamic QRs route through a server you control. Update the destination in your dashboard; the printed code immediately serves the new content.
- 4
Only dynamic codes can be tracked
Static QRs cannot be tracked because scans never touch your server. Dynamic QRs pass through your redirect, so you can count scans, log device and country, and attribute conversions.

When to use which
Static is fine for permanent data (vCard, Wi-Fi credentials, fixed text). Use dynamic for any printed marketing material — flyers, packaging, posters — because the destination almost always evolves.
Every QR type, explained
These are the types you can pick when creating a code. Names match the builder dropdown.
Dynamic URL (editable)
Opens a web page through a short redirect you can change anytime — the default choice for anything printed.
Static URL
Encodes the web address directly in the image. Free forever, but the destination can never change and scans are not counted.
Plain Text
Shows a fixed piece of text when scanned — instructions, a serial number, a message. No internet needed.
Phone Call
Starts a phone call to the number you set as soon as the code is scanned.
Opens a pre-addressed email (optionally with subject and body) in the scanner’s mail app.
SMS
Opens a pre-filled text message to your number — handy for keyword-based opt-ins.
Starts a WhatsApp conversation with your number, with an optional pre-filled message.
WiFi Network
Connects the scanner to your Wi-Fi network without typing the password — for shops, hotels and venues.
vCard Contact
Adds a contact card (name, phone, email, company) straight into the scanner’s address book.
Coupon Code
Shows a discount code on a branded page, with optional claim limits — for packaging and print promotions.
Lead Capture Form
Opens a hosted form that collects the visitor’s email and consent — every submission lands in your Leads tab.
Review Collection
Sends scanners to a hosted page that asks for a review — ideal on receipts and after-sales inserts.
Wholesale Inquiry
A hosted B2B contact form for wholesale requests — used on trade-show material and product packaging.
Loyalty Reward
Lets repeat customers claim a reward from a hosted page — for loyalty and re-order campaigns.
Frequently asked questions
What is a dynamic QR code?
A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect URL served by QRCode Suite. The actual destination is stored in your workspace and can be changed at any time, so you can update where a printed QR code points without reprinting it.
How many dynamic QR codes can I create?
The Free plan includes 3 dynamic QR codes. Pro and above include unlimited dynamic QR codes. Static QR codes never count against the limit.
What is a conditional redirect?
A conditional redirect sends scanners to different destinations based on rules — such as device type (iOS vs Android), country, time of day, or scan count. Conditional redirects are available on the Pro plan.
What formats can I export QR codes in?
All plans support PNG and SVG export. Pro adds CSV data export. Business adds XLSX export, branded PDF reports, and bulk generation with CSV import.
Can I add a logo or custom colors to my QR codes?
Yes, on Pro and above. Custom logo embedding, gradients and frames are part of the Pro design toolkit; the Free plan uses standard colours.
