Dynamic vs static QR codes

A static QR encodes its destination URL directly inside the matrix — once printed, the target is locked forever. A dynamic QR encodes a short redirect URL that resolves through a server; the actual destination can be changed at any time without reprinting. Visually the two are identical; the difference is purely the URL they encode and whether scans can be tracked.

  1. 1

    Same visual, different URL

    Both QR types look identical when printed. The only difference is that static QRs encode the long target URL directly; dynamic QRs encode a short redirect URL like /r/abc123.

  2. 2

    Static = locked after print

    Static QRs cannot be changed once printed. If the destination URL moves, the printed material becomes useless and the QR has to be regenerated and reprinted.

  3. 3

    Dynamic = editable after print

    Dynamic QRs route through a server you control. Update the destination in your dashboard; the printed code immediately serves the new content.

  4. 4

    Only dynamic codes can be tracked

    Static QRs cannot be tracked because scans never touch your server. Dynamic QRs pass through your redirect, so you can count scans, log device and country, and attribute conversions.

  5. 5

    When to use which

    Static is fine for permanent data (vCard, Wi-Fi credentials, fixed text). Use dynamic for any printed marketing material — flyers, packaging, posters — because the destination almost always evolves.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dynamic QR code?

A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect URL. The actual destination is stored in your WordPress database and can be changed at any time. This means you can update where a printed QR code points without reprinting it.

How many dynamic QR codes can I create?

The Free plan includes 1 dynamic QR code. Pro and above include unlimited dynamic QR codes.

What is a conditional redirect?

A conditional redirect sends scanners to different destinations based on rules — such as device type (iOS vs Android), country, time of day, or scan count. Conditional redirects are available on the Pro plan.

What formats can I export QR codes in?

All plans support PNG and SVG export. Pro adds CSV, XLSX, and PDF exports. Business adds ZIP asset export for bulk downloads.

Can I add a logo or custom colors to my QR codes?

Yes. QRCode Suite supports custom colors and logo embedding for all QR codes.
