QR code size guide

The minimum printed size of a QR code depends on the scan distance and the amount of data encoded. A reliable rule of thumb: 1 cm of QR for every 10× of scan distance — a 2 cm QR scans reliably at 20 cm, a 10 cm QR scans at 1 m, a 1 m QR scans at 10 m. Module count (data density) sets a floor on how small a code can shrink.

  1. 1

    Rule of thumb: 1:10 ratio

Print size = scan distance ÷ 10. A 2 cm QR reads at 20 cm (business card distance); a 10 cm QR reads at 1 m (poster); a 30 cm QR reads at 3 m (window display).

  2. 2

    Account for module density

QRs encoding longer URLs have more modules (smaller squares per cm). A v1 QR (21×21 modules) at 2 cm is fine; a v10 QR (57×57) at the same size scans unreliably.

  3. 3

    Minimum scannable size: 2 cm

Most phone cameras struggle below 2 cm on glossy paper. Matte paper improves contrast; reflective stickers usually need 3 cm minimum.

  4. 4

    Business cards & flyers

2–3 cm is standard. Use error correction level Q (25%) so logo overlays remain scan-safe.

  5. 5

    Posters, billboards, outdoor

For a poster viewed at 1 m, use 10 cm. For a billboard viewed at 10 m, use 1 m. Add a 4-module quiet zone of white around the code.

Frequently asked questions

What is QRCode Suite?

QRCode Suite is a premium WordPress plugin that generates branded, dynamic QR codes directly inside your WordPress dashboard. Scan data is stored on your own server — not on a third-party SaaS platform — and WooCommerce orders can be attributed to specific QR codes.

Does QRCode Suite require a separate subscription?

The Free plan is available at no cost. Paid plans (Pro, Business, Agency) are licensed per WordPress site and billed monthly or annually. There is no separate per-scan fee.

What QR code types does QRCode Suite support?

QRCode Suite supports 15 QR code types: URL, vCard, Wi-Fi, SMS, Email, WhatsApp, PDF, Coupon, Plain Text, Social profile, WooCommerce Product, WooCommerce Reorder, Link Hub, Phone, and Dynamic URL.

Can I change the destination of a QR code after printing it?

Yes. Dynamic QR codes use a short redirect URL. You can update the destination from your WordPress dashboard at any time without generating or reprinting the code.

Is QRCode Suite GDPR-compliant?

Yes. QRCode Suite hashes IP addresses with SHA-256 before storage so no raw IPs are ever saved. It also filters bot traffic automatically and includes configurable data-retention settings.
