Track QR Codes in Google Analytics

QR code tracking in Google Analytics works two ways, and this integration does the server-side half properly. Connect a GA4 property with its Measurement ID and an API secret, and QRCode Suite sends a qr_scan event to Google’s Measurement Protocol for every real scan — carrying the code’s ID and slug, the device type, the country and the campaign — plus qr_conversion events with value and currency when a scan leads to an order or a signup. The client_id GA4 requires is derived from an anonymised, hashed session, so repeat scans by the same visitor line up under one GA4 client without cookies and without anything traceable back to an IP address. Events are dispatched after the visitor has already been redirected, bot scans are filtered out before anything is sent, and a GA4 outage can never slow a scan down. Pair it with UTM tagging so the landing session in GA4 carries the same campaign.

The Google Analytics integration starts on the Pro plan (€9 per month).

qr_scan events over the Measurement Protocol

Each real scan posts a qr_scan event to Google’s collect endpoint using your Measurement ID and API secret. The event carries the code’s ID and slug, the device type, the country, and the campaign when the code belongs to one.

Conversions with value and currency

When a scan leads to a purchase or signup, a qr_conversion event follows — with the event name, its source, the order value and the currency — so GA4 can put revenue next to the code and campaign that produced it.

Cookie-free, deterministic visitor identity

The client_id is derived by hashing the anonymous scan session, so repeat scans by the same visitor map to the same GA4 client. No cookies are set, events are flagged non-personalized, and nothing sent is reversible to an IP address.

Never in the visitor’s way

Events are dispatched after the redirect has already been served, so a slow or unreachable GA4 endpoint cannot delay a scan. Scans identified as bots are excluded before dispatch and never reach your property.

Encrypted credentials, one-click test

Your Measurement ID and API secret are stored encrypted at rest, and the integration settings include a send-test button that fires a sample qr_scan so you can confirm the wiring in GA4’s DebugView before a single poster ships.

Know the limits

These are server-side events — they complement your site’s own GA4 tag, they do not replace it. Session and landing-page attribution still come from the tag on the destination page, so combine this with UTM parameters on the code for full campaign reporting. And the qr_scan params are custom parameters: register them as custom dimensions in GA4 before expecting them in standard reports.

Frequently asked questions

What analytics does QRCode Suite track?

QRCode Suite tracks scan count, unique scanners, device type, operating system, browser, country, city, referrer, and UTM parameters. Bot traffic is detected and excluded, and IP addresses are hashed before any event is written.

How long is analytics data retained?

Retention is set by your plan and enforced automatically: 30 days on Free, 12 months on Pro, 24 months on Business, and 36 months on Agency. Events older than the window are purged.

Does QRCode Suite integrate with Google Analytics?

Yes. GA4 integration is available on Pro and above. QR code scans are sent as GA4 events, enabling full funnel tracking from scan to conversion.

Does QRCode Suite support Meta Pixel?

Yes. Meta Pixel events are fired on scan for Pro and above plans, enabling retargeting audiences based on QR code interactions.

Where is my scan data stored?

Scan events are stored in QRCode Suite's own database, where they stay first-party: we never sell them, never share them with an ad network, and never enrich them with a third-party tracker. Nothing is forwarded to GA4, Meta Pixel or any other external platform unless you connect that integration yourself.
