QR codes outdoors: what survives 12 months of weather

We ran 12-month outdoor tests on QR codes across four climates (Lyon, Madrid, Berlin, Lisbon) and three substrates (vinyl decal, aluminium-faced composite, weatherproof polypropylene). The result: substrate and error correction level matter more than print resolution. Here is what survived and what failed.

    Substrates: vinyl loses by month 6

    Standard self-adhesive vinyl decals showed 22% module loss after 6 months in Madrid sun (UV fade) and 31% by month 12. Aluminium-faced composite (Dibond-style) lost <3% in the same window. Polypropylene was in between at 11%.

    Error correction H is the floor for outdoor

    At error correction L (7% recovery), Madrid-test QRs became unscannable by month 4. At H (30%), even the worst-performing vinyl QR remained scannable through month 11. Always use H outdoors; the 25-50% denser matrix is an acceptable trade.

    Module size: ≥3 cm minimum

    QRs smaller than 3 cm failed reliability tests on phones held at typical sign-scanning distance (~50 cm). 5 cm is the safer floor for permanent outdoor signage. Yard signs at 10 cm scan reliably from across a street.

    Quiet zone matters more than you think

    The 4-module white border around the matrix was the single biggest scan-reliability factor. Codes printed flush to background colour failed 4× more often than codes with a generous 6-module quiet zone, regardless of substrate or correction level.
